Reviews

“Ever feel like taking a cross-country road trip? Listen to Anne Harris' eponymous album and grab your keys. Harris lets an eclectic mix of percussion and her own fiddling guide her soulful voice… …this album is a shout out to anyone who likes earthy tones and vibrant lyrics, an artist who in many ways resembles folk goddess Ani DiFranco.”
     - Illinois Entertainer

“Kicking off with a song that could easily mesh with Dave Matthews or even Led Zeppelin's ‘That's the Way,’ this musician can find a good melody and evolve it over five to six minutes. … Harris definitely is onto something special.” AMG Rating: 4 Stars
     - All Music Guide Expert Review, Jason MacNeil

“Debut disc by vocalist/fiddler is seductive & sweet… If this is her debut disc, one can only imagine what’s next for this talented artist. 4 Stars.”
     - Chicago Arts & Entertainment, Paul Barile

“Buckle yourselves in, kids. This is a great ride. There is not a quiet moment on this CD. It bursts with life in every note. … Each song wants to explore. She has a knack for layering slinking, sliding, sensually writhing notes just beneath the surface, whether they’re played on the fiddle or carried by her voice. … It’ll make your toes wiggle.”

Good For It

© 2001 Anne Harris

I can see a change is coming
I can read his eyes
Love's abundant mystery
Written in the skies
Bring it on, bring it on I cry
And you know that I'm so good for it
You know I'm so good

Bend my ears with all your dreaming
Whisper every sigh
Part those tender lips my darling
Teach me how to fly
Bring it on, bring it on I cry
And you know that I'm so good for it
You know I'm so good

Swallow me inside your longing
I will lead your way
Give me all your secret spaces...
And you know that I'm so good for it
You know I'm so good

I Think I Got You

© 2001 Anne Harris

I think I got you now, uh huh
I think you love me now, oh yeah

I saw that look when you caught my eye
You had to catch your breath
It's over now better give it up
You know your heart is mine

You're a feather floating trying to reach the ground
I'm the storm that blows you 'round and 'round

You talked so cool and so nonchalant
Trying to buy some time
There's nowhere to run and to hide from your heart
Is just a waste of time

Your hands like leaves they tremble
Your forehead beads with dew
I sometimes almost kinda feel for you

Where's the Girl

© 2001 Anne Harris

I never thought tomorrow would come so fast
I'm trying to make a deal with today
When suddenly out of the blue it comes hurling past
Wish it would step aside out my way

Racing across the lawns to the IGA
Gotta buy all the candy in sight
Crying for hours and hours on the telephone
Wish I was pretty wish he would call me

Going, going, gone
Going, going, gone
Where's the girl
Where's the girl

Looking across the threshold of womanhood
Breathless and restless as a child
I never knew a body could feel this good
I never thought I'd be this alive

I never thought I'd end up in this old town
Drinking away my sorrows and dreams
I never thought tomorrow would come so fast
My youth is leaking out of my seams

Rugged Road

© 2001 Anne Harris

In this life there's a lot of struggle
Endless strife times when I'd much rather leave
Find me a hiding place

But then there's you fighting like a warrior
Trying to get thru all these doors that I have closed
I think you're gonna get in soon

It's a rugged road to the center of me
All the twists and turns thru the dark and thru the trees
But just hold your course and you'll find
The light in me

I'm so shy I'm not my mother's daughter
Standing by wading these murky waters through
Holding out the light for you

In a sigh I could dispel the silence
End this lie tell you what I've been dreamin' of
But the sound won't come

There will be easier days when faith abounds
But the lesson's in the map that guides us there

In the night dawn is around the corner
Spreading light you can feel it's coming soon
By the fading light of the moon

So hold on tight it can't be much longer
Fight the fight knowing that I am fighting too
The day is gonna blossom soon

Bother Me

© 2001 Anne Harris

You look a little weary
I see a sadness in your eyes
I've seen it before
It don't seem right to me
How you're weighted down by the thick of the world
You're burning inside
I'm here by your side

Come on baby bother me
Tell me what's been on your mind
Set those little worries free
And bother me

So give to me your troubles
I got a shoulder big enough
To carry you thru
'Cause I can give you tenderness
That will put you back on top of the world
My lovin' is true
I'm here by your side

Hush little baby don't you cry
Momma's gonna rock you a lullaby
And if that lullaby don't move
Momma's gonna get you in the groove
Momma's gonna get you in the groove

Dandelion

© 2001 Anne Harris

The Spring had taken hold
he icy world was dying
And in the sidewalk cracks
Grew the yellow dandelions
Sixteen and anxoiusly
Holding my heart and sighing
He saw the woman in me
And he called me Dandelion

In a small town life's so big
But the bigness feels so small
And love is sold at the highest price
When the wildflowers call

My dad said stay away
My Ma, he kept her cryin'
And thru the cracks in their hearts
Grew the yellow dandelions

He smiled and led the way
The field aflame with flower
And in his arms I lay
In a petal laden shower

And where he wandered I don't know
But I can't stop tryin'
'Cause deep inside's a sprouting seed
And I'll call her Dandelion

Leaves Turnin'

© 2001 Anne Harris

My grandaddy was a sharecropper in the West Virginia hills
And his dark brown hands in the dark brown earth

They move my spirit still
My grandmama was a tall, tall tree and her laugh would ring for miles
And she loved her babies and she raised them right
And they always made her smile

Leaves turning spinning 'round in a flurry of yellow and red
And I know that time is just a fleeting friend
But I hope we'll meet again
Leaves turning dancing down in the fury of an Autumn wind
And my loved ones gone such a long, long way
But I know we'll meet again
I know we'll meet again

Grandaddy told me "Girl, just grow and keep your head up high
'Cause there's gonna be those in a smaller place
will try and make you cry."
Grandmama told me "Keep your pride and keep along your way.
I never felt prouder than I do right now. I can see a brighter day."

My grandaddy's on the other side but he keeps a watchful eye
I can feel the warmth of his dark brown hands, I carry them inside
My grandmama watches over me, she's standing by his side
And their love rains down like the turning leaves, I feel it all the time

Someday

© 2001 Anne Harris

Someday she's gonna find it
Someday she's gonna fly
Spread her dreams and never look back
Never question why
Someday they're gonna wonder
How'd she get so high
What'd she have to sacrifice
Will she pay the price

Someday it's gonna make sense
Someday it will be clear
All this struggle, all this hard times
All this...end is very near
Someday will be our glory
Someday is gonna shine
We'll all laugh and say told you so
Knew it all the time

Today is someone's someday from yesterday
Tomorrow will be ours I know

Someday she's gonna find it
Someday she's gonna fly
Someday they're gonna wonder...

What I Am

© 2001 Anne Harris

What I am is a little lost girl
waiting on the corner for the right directions
What I am is a hungry mouth
looking for a bite
What I am is a flashing light
holding up the traffic in the intersection
What I am never fit quite right

Free me, release me
See me for what I am

What I am is a thunderclap
ridin’ on the tail of a bolt of lightning
What I am is a tangle of weeds
What I am is a spinning wheel
turning up the stones on some lonesome highway
What I am is a fistful of seeds

And what comes around goes around
And what soars must be pulled to the ground

What I am is an open book
Filled with the pages of my changing story
What I am is a bird taking flight
What I am are the hopes and dreams
Of all the ones who have come before me
What I am never fit quite right
